THE SARNATH CAMPAIGN

By Vincent Coffey

For any of you out there who are somewhat entertained by warhammer flavor-text and stuff like that, here is an example of something I wrote... which is basically the story behind a WHFB/WHRPG campaign I was working on for a bit. (this is the younger of two WHRPG campaign stories I've run) but I thought I'd post it for anybody's benefit. I wish I could help with the current campaign idea on the list... but does anybody know for sure what it is about? This is the intro basically which sets the stage and gives a goal or drive to any character type (or race) and establishes motives for the bad guys. Here goes... On the southern boundary of the Empire of man amid the Black Mountain Range lies a harsh weather-beaten realm tortured by the elements. Wracked with earthquakes and deigned almost inhospitable by all of the old world, It is a collection of ice-carved plataus and glacier-ripped valleys known to the dwarves as the Grungrim Ice shelf. The empire named it the Keldengorges, as did every other race have its own disdainful name for this no-mans land that suited to footnote the maps of thier explorers well. It was said that this part of the black mountain range, bedecked with it's monumental glaciers was the last remnant of the massive, all-devouring ice age that occured during the first reign of chaos. When the Icy wastes buried Kislev and cut a jagged course down the world-edge mountains this furthest glacier came far enough south to cover the eastern three-fourths of what is now known as the moot. Superstitious peoples in the townships around nuln and the moot called that part of the range "the evil ice" -- a title which followed with hushed whispers and grave oaths about a land where once ancient peoples reigned, now entombed in icy wastes and lost forever....

.... They were half right in thier assumtions.

In recent times Earthquakes the Black mountain ranges had reached a buckling fury unseen since the cataclysms which wracked the world edge mountains before the fall of the ancient golden age of the Dwarfs. The tortured peaks split and shook and the tremors were felt, at thier worst, as far as Quenelles in Brettonia and Altdorf in the empire. The Keldengorges themselves shook as if to reject the icy legacy of chaos that engulfed it. The glaciers cracked, avalances tumbled, at in a last, terrible burst of fury two huge volcanos errupted. For two years the black mountains were almost entirely hidden by a swirling storm of ash. When the ashes cleared and the mountains slumbered... no-one could believe the spectacle that awaited them high in the face of the mountains.

Where once was craggy peaks and inhospitable stone... a lush new frontier territory now stood above the middle of the world. Where once was trackless ice, could now be seen rivers running deep into unseen valleys. The Volcanic ash had covered the plataus and mountainsides with nutrients and minerals... where once was wasteland stood forests and plains nestled just below the clouds. The various nations of the old world quickly heard news of this new frontier and each sent scouts and expeditionary forces to assay for themselves what this new land could hold...

Dotting the landscape, scouts found the remains of a long extinct civilization. What was thought to be the kingdom of Sarnath -- the forgotten city of the ancients, the mother-realm of the lost city known as Vorshgar in Naggaroth -- Where Malekith found the Circlet of Iron. This, among other things could inspire Ambition and avarice in Lords of all the lands of warhammer.

.... For the wood elves, they found that beneath the now vanquished ice slumbered the seeds of many plants that were dying out as early as the wood elves arrival in Anthel Loren, and evidence of flora that was even then extinct....

.... The dwarves saw fantastic potential for new wealth in minerals uncovered and thrust up from the earth, and itched with avarice at the treasures that could lay in the ice-chiseled rock...

.... The skaven had known for ages that a great warpstone meteor had fallen within the glacier long, long ago... and countless bands of troops had been sent to recover it -- none returned. Somewhere in those valleys it now must lay exposed... They sought thier inheritance...

.... The chaos dwarfs saw the Two volcanos as an event of great Portent, perhaps the sign of a prophesy that this must be a new land to bring to heel and conquer, to make a foothold for themselves beyond the worlds-edge mountains and from there spearhead a new era for thier slave empire, and bring Hashut re-newed into the nightmares of the old world...

.... The Greenskins wandered into the new unclaimed lands unimpeded, and when it became obvious the rich lands were being contested begun to draw unheard of numbers of orks and goblins in search of easy treasure and a good good fight...

... The Empire saw this new land as a territory that must be seized at all costs. If the territory was not taken as a new jewel in the Imperial crown, it would certainly be taken as a new breeding warren of one of it's enemies. The legions of man sallied forth to claim it's due, loathe to surrender the slightest bit of thier prize to any competitor.

.... The Dark Elves were filled with Boundless lust and covetous for the secrets and treasures that most assuradly rest within the Temples and Vaults of Lost Sarnath... Doubtless that powerful relics reside under those ruins, items which could hold the key to new and redoubled success in thier ancient emnity for thier high-elf cousins...

.... The discovery of Sarnath did not escape those in the land of Ulthuan either, and the Loremasters of Hoeth advised the Phoenix King and Everqueen that the Lands of the Keldengorge and the ruins of Sarnath must be Captured first at any cost...

.... In Brettonia the stories circulated of the newly uncovered realm, rich with the fecundity of nature manifest, and how it would soon be contested by all the powers in the old world. Knights gathered about the standards of thier lords, some saying that the glory of facing such a challenge could not be denied, others hoped that in these new and beautiful lands came new promise of finding the elusive hiding place of the one true grail.

.... In the darkest manuscripts of Necromancy there were brief refences to the cities of Vorshgar and Sarnath, amoung various other forgotten places, both named and un-namable. The uncovering of one of these fabled places of magical lore and power could not escape the notice of the most dark and soul-less of practicioners of the black arts. With cold malice and under an unrelenting march, the armies of the dead converged on the virgin land...

.... Champions of Chaos had long been plauged with visions of the emergence of Sarnath, and chaos warbands pillaged thier way south to wrest the prize from the bloodied carcasses of all who stood between them and thier prize... The power emanating from uncovered sarnath nourished the twisted forms of demons... and beastmen sought to claim the new wildlands all thier own.

.... Within the greatest pyramid temple of Zlatlan the council of High Skinks debated the cryptic statements of thier Slaan mage lord. The Slaan had spent a good while enterpreting the portents of the appearance of Sarnath, and meditating unceasingly upon it's brief mention upon one of thier ancient prophesy tablets -- refusing contact with all other slaan while he did so, and only barely tolerating the inquests of his skink retainers. From what the skinks could interpret from the curt and infrequent croaking of thier lord, The contest of the "Lesser Races" over Sarnath was of either fair importance to the world plan, or of practically no relavence whatsoever. As the high council always decided in these matters, They would err on the side of caution... Alerting the other mage priests and sounding the drums of war.

And so it came to pass... a New Land setting upon old borders, and from each power a cause to claim it regardless of risk. The Exploratory Forces from each realm converged on thier new prize and began carving it's outskirts into a powerbase for invasion. As the battles raged on, armies would fight bitterly for every secret hidden in the passes, and for every step of ground that would bring them to thier ultimate goal... THE RUINS OF SARNATH!
